Someone left us a message on our Facebook page about the Train Shoppe in Salt Lake City. It sounded fun, and we decided to check it out. We were not disappointed. We had so much fun playing with the trains.
The Train Shoppe just opened up last Thanksgiving, so it is just about to have it's 1 year anniversary. When you first walk in you will see a store full of model trains and other gadgets for the train nerds. In the back of the store there is a sign that says "To Trains." Head that way and have fun!

Salty Gulch |
You will walk into an old west town called Salty Gulch with a large train track in front of you with model trains. When we visited the room was set up for Christmas, but it is usually an old west town and in October they have a haunted display. They also have a small room with some smaller model trains. The cool thing about these trains is that you can control the trains--for the cost of a quarter. Once you put your quarter in, a small touch screen turns on and you can control the speed of the train, ring the bell, blow the whistle, and turn on the train's lights. We put a quarter into every screen that was there and I'm sure we could have spent a lot more quarters. Our boys had so much fun!

You can see the small screen where our 7 year old is running the train. |

There is a one other fun surprise. They have a small train for your family to ride on, and as you ride you get the chance to shoot at objects. They are laser guns and you shoot at small targets (much like Cabelas) and things will tip over or make noises. In order to ride the train, buy $2 tickets in the store. It's a short ride, but worth the $2 ticket fare.
They also have a small room to rent if you want to have a birthday party which would be lots of fun if you have a train lover. There is also a tiny "saloon" with drinks and snacks...just bottled soda and packaged cookies, but if you're hungry it would be fun to grab a snack by the trains.
Check their calendar on
Facebook to see what days the trains are running. Generally they have them on Friday and Saturday, but sometimes there are other days during the week. Right now you can visit Santa on Saturdays. The times are listed on the calendar as well.
So grab a roll of quarters, and head up to Salty Gulch in the Train Shoppe located at 2964 S State St in Salt Lake City.
